Having a passion for wine and the Napa Valley, Nelson and Penny started Chivalry Wines in 2012. Conceived on a breakfast napkin at the Butter Cream Bakery one fine Napa morning by Nelson, our winemaker Israel Montanez and family friend Oscar Escareno, the concept was to produce quality boutique wines with an initial focus on higher end Napa Cabernet.
Celebrating a recent milestone in our winemaking history, we have proudly added Kian Tavakoli, former oenologist of Opus One, as our consulting winemaker. His expertise enriches our heritage, enhancing our wines with his mastery.
Israel has been making wine in Napa Valley for over 20 years and has the pedigree to prove it; having worked at William Hill, Franciscan and Far Niente. All of Israel’s vintages are well-received and outstanding.

Chivalry Wines is committed to finding the best grapes for every vintage. We don’t maintain grower contracts but rather search out the best price/quality grapes each year. As each harvest approaches you’ll find Israel, Penny and Nelson in the vineyards sampling for quality and ripeness.
Once we find that special vineyard, our winemaker Israel Montanez provides direction to the grower regarding exactly how we would like the grapes when harvested. We not only check for the correct brix (sugar content) but also make sure the seeds and grapes are ripe as well.
The attention to detail is what makes the best wines we can produce.
There is an old saying in the wine business…
“You can make bad wine out of good grapes but you can’t make good wine out of bad grapes.”
